700 Hundred Years Worth of Ghosts and How I Spent My Sunday

Yesterday, I decided to lump the last of my secondary characters into one mass character profile—“the ghosts” that haunt Avery House and the surrounding grounds.

This was one of the best decisions I could have made because it forced me to focus on the 700 year historic timeline of the location instead of on individual ghosts--which would have been overly time consuming and not necessarily any more helpful.

I’m so thrilled with the results. I know historically why the ghost (some individuals and others as massed entities) are haunting, how their individual hauntings are manifested and generally what brings on an occurrence. Okay, it looks like I’m giving away that the ghosts in SAH are real—but, real or not, their stories are known to the living characters, so I need to know those tales as well.

Have you ever mistaken something for a ghost? As an adult or child--even for a second?

Comments

yes. yes. and yes.

It's spooky when it happens. My brain and my eyes do weird things at times. Too much imagination.
Then again, are you sure it's too much imagination or is your mind simply open to more possiblities?

You edited out your fireflies!!! And yes, I do think of them as fairies at times, too. But that's not the same as that sudden mistake of the eyes interpreted by the brain as Something Else.
You caught me. And I was thinking my mind was straying away from the ghost question.

Guess that means there will have to be a firefly post in the future. They've been awesome around here lately.
I have, but mainly because there have been so many 'real' encounters with ghosts over my lifetime that I just naturally go there first. lol. Logical explanations usually come second.
I work in and own a store that was built just prior to 1830. The thing that strikes me now and again is how un-haunted it feels and sounds. Which leads me to wonder about all the houses and places that did give me chills or make me think I saw or heard things.

I'm so curious about your encounters.
I'm including a few of them in my wips, so if they ever make it to print...:)

Wonderful--another reason to keep my fingers and toes crossed for you:)

And me for you! :) I'm dying to read your stories.

Hurry Up!

I can't wait to read this book. Write, write, write! Mistaken something for a ghost--heck no. I always saw real ghosts as a kid. Now I just see shadows, coats hanging on doorknobs and plastic bags caught in trees. Bummer. The ghosts were much more exciting.

Re: Hurry Up!

LOL. Actually, I'm rather happy that I can wake up in the night and stumble to the bathroom without as much fear of seeing Something as I had as a kid.

Nice to see you on lj, Ginger.
