Vermont, Dragons and Horrendous Beasts

My WIP is set in Vermont-- specifically in the northwest corner. I've created a backstory which includes a myth and  pseudo-history, but I've been lacking a pinpoint location. I needed a place where Samuel de Champlain might have seen a fortress with walls decorated with dragons and horrendous beasts. This morning, I thought of it. It was so freaking obvious. I’ve been there several times.  I’ve written another story in the exact location.  I don't need to research at all. Yay! I’m totally thrilled.

I really like the idea of readers being able to explore real history and see the truth that surrounds my created myth. And I bet a few of you can guess the location—there aren’t too many place in northern Vermont where dragons decorate stone.

I’m a happy writer. Now off to my day job.

*yeah, that's a photo of Hermitage Castle--or maybe it's not.

Most excellent! Now that's what I call using landscape as a character. Oh and your subconscious knew all along, didn't it? Just took it a while to percolate up to the conscious mind. Wicked cool when it does.
You are exactly right. And actually the other supposedly short story I wrote became unweildly because I tried to include too many cool historic and natural tidbits. Hopefully, I'll keep that in mind as I brew this novel.
OH, GOD, that's my second favorite castle in England. Robin Redcap! Evil sorcerers! What's not to love?!?

Keen. Can't wait to read stories that take place there. I wrote one once, too... it will never see the light of day, though. :D
I have an old novel manuscript that contains a fake myth about Hermitage Castle. I should pull it out of the novel and make it a stand-alone short. It's a redcap creation story--sort of like Adam and Eve with teeth, claws and bloody caps.

Someday we should have a gathering of the writing clans at Hermitage.
Hermitage would be an excellent place for a writing party!

And ooo, a redcap creation story - yes, that definitely should become a stand alone short.
You know I have a thing about castles, right? :) Instant enchantment!
The trick is how to bring them to North America, but that's why I love writing fantasy.

Yay! Good for you. I love it when the penny drops like that. Happy writing.
Hm-m I like it even better when I think of it in terms of pennies dropping--and happy writing back at you!
