Story Love and the Age-old Debate: Clothes or No Clothes?

I officially love my WIP. The characters are coming together—and they aren’t trying to mirror the characters in my last story. The plot has turning points and some cool scenes that I can’t wait to write. Tension and motive have arrived . . . and today my husband and I got in the age-old debate of clothes or no clothes.

One of my main characters lives on a plane of existence between the living and the dead. He can move between planes. He has a body, but also can be noncorporeal, like a ghost. He was enchanted in the 14th century.

So my question is: what does he wear?

I see him in his 14th garb most of the time, but what happens if he steals modern clothes and puts them on so he can blend in and maybe have his way with girls? Does he have to take off his “ghostly garb” and  put on the “real” modern clothes or does he just wear layers?

It isn’t exactly the same, but I get annoyed when characters destroy all their clothes or disrobe when they shape-shift and then miraculously appear fully clothed when they change back—it makes no sense to me. And it makes me obsess on my character’s wardrobe changes.

What do you think?

This sounds very interesting, Pat. As per shape-shifting and wardrobe change, I think describing wardrobe is important and makes the fiction more vivid. You can just establish the rules upfront, mention how this affects the clothing, and then mention it less frequently later in the story. Then the reader will know. But this stuff bugs me too.

He can move between plains.

Pardon the copyeditor in me, but "the plains Indians did a lot of plane-walking, I've heard." I imagine it was only a typo here. ;-)
I appreciate you pointing out my mistake. It was more a matter of hurrying than typo. Yesterday it was "rooster" instead of "roster" :)

I do think you're right. As long as the reader knows what can be done and it is consistent, then I'm good. Maybe he simply has to get undress in the other plane and then come into this plane naked.

Could he just sort of manifest the clothes he needs when corporeal? Then he wouldn't have to steal, just think it into existence? Would that work?

I love your idea, btw :)
Unfortunately, the stolen clothes are a story thread.

You'll be happy--there is a very naughty rescue greyhound in this story.

Hope everything is going good for you.
In that case, I got nothing. I'm looking forward to reading the story and seeing how you handle that :)

Everything's pretty good. Definitely better than it was before. Looking forward to seeing how the greyhound fits in there, too :)
It could be really interesting to have him figure out how modern clothes work, too, since zippers and elastic and Velcro were definitely unknown in the 14th century. I like the idea of establishing how it works, then not worrying about it, but I see where there is some sort of issue about what to do with the clothes he has taken off.
Wonderful idea, but he'd have had the chance to watch clothes evolve and probably put them on throughout history. However he might have some odd comments about them.

Now, I'm thinking that when he takes off his clothes perhaps they appear like ghostly cobwebs.

Thank you--brainstorming always helps me so much.
Glad to hear you're loving it! What an interesting and amusing problem to ponder. I like the idea of making it into a plot point (that's what I usually do when I can't explain something easily -- make it bigger!)
I spent the morning working on his character profile/rules of magic and I'm ending up doing exactly what you do--excellent advice by the way.

If one wears ghost-like clothing and looses said clothing, it is fairly obvious where you have to go to get more: ghosts or the realm of the dead.

I'm going with the get naked before putting on "real" clothes.

You're just looking for an excuse to get that guy naked, methinks!

And he will have nice buns:)
