The Best Gothic Novel EVER!

So I'm brewing my next novel and my main character is obsessed with gothic novels--which means I get to stuff my brain with all things gothic--yay!

My question to you is, what was or is your favorite gothic novel(s)? I don't care if the books were classics or junky. I want the truth.

I'll confess that I read all the Dark Shadow novels when I was in junior high school--and they weren't easy to find.  And I do recall the first gothic novel I read. It was called SONS OF THE WOLF and I got it out of the school library. I have no idea who wrote it, but I remember thinking it was the best book ever.

Comments

Rebecca. Awesome book.
Awesome indeed. Hmmm, awesome enough that perhaps I should change my MC name.
THE MONK by Matthew Lewis. Virgins, Satan, magic, kidnappings!

THE HIDDEN HAND: OR, CAPITOLA THE MADCAP by Eden Southworth
I've never read THE MONK and it looks like it may have to be my first indulgence.

BTW, I have a prompt to send to you, but I don't seem to have your email. It doesn't involve Barbie:)
Oh, good.

:D
I confess to still having a soft spot in my heart for one of the originals The Monk by Matthew Lewis. I think it was the combination of being both dark and over the top and camp that got to me. I just had to keep reading to see what was coming next.
Dark and over the top and camp is perfect.

I'm going for a seriously haunted house atop the cliffs overlooking Lake Champlain.
Does Jane Eyre count? If it does, that's my vote.

Dark Shadows was my favorite TV show when I was a kid! (ahem, dating myself...) Though I have to admit this was mainly because I found it incredibly funny that the actors were always flubbing their lines.
Jane Eyre counts in my book.

I used to rush home from school to watch Dark Shadows and I didn't dare tell my friends why I wouldn't meet them until after 4. I remember the flubbed lines:) but I liked it because I have a weakness for vampires, werewolves and witches.

Just finished Graceling and I'm still thinking about how I really feel about it.
